JOHOR BAHRU, 6 JULY-3 AUGUST 2019 – School of Chemical & Energy Engineering (SCEE) was hosting about 209 students from Politeknik Akamigas Palembang for the Summer School: Oil & Gas Learning Experience (OG-X). The summer school was conducted in two sessions: 6 – 20 July 2019 for Session 1, and 20 July – 3 August 2019 for the Session 2. This is in fact the second year of the same program was conducted, following the success of 2018’s summer school. Over the course of two weeks, students from each session were taught by experienced professors and lecturers from the chemical, gas, and petroleum engineering department. Among the subjects taught were the principles of chemical engineering, materials and energy balance, and organic chemistry.

The summer school was designed to provide a total learning experience which do not limited to learning session only in the classroom. The summer school’s participants were given the chance to have an in-depth tour to our laboratories. Among the visited laboratories were Advanced Membrane Technology Research Centre (AMTEC), Gas Processing Laboratory, and Reservoir Laboratory. During the visit, the students were exposed to learning by research experience through detail explanation and hands-on activities. Besides lectures and laboratory visits, various outdoor activities were also conducted for the students which includes sports such as futsal, basketball, volleyball, etc., Zumba dance workout, Explorace, as well as visiting some of Johor Bahru famous attractions.

Both sessions were officiated by Prof. Datuk Dr. Ahmad Fauzi Ismail, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation on 7 July and 21 July, respectively. The opening ceremony was also attended by Prof. Dr. Mohd Ghazali Mohd Nawawi, Chair of SCEE, and Dr. Hasrinah Hasbullah, Director of OG-X Program. It was remarked during the ceremony that OG-X summer school might be an annual occurrence, signifying strong collaboration between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Politeknik Akamigas Palembang.
