Introduction : iidex2016 is an innovation competition organised by Research Innovation Business Unit (RIBU), IRMI UiTM and this annual event enters its 12th year. In line with theme “Reviving Innovation, Soaring Commercialisation, iidex2016 is the platform for researcher to explore new deals and potential ventures through research collaboration. More than 700 participants from various public and private universities, higher learning institutions, colleges and schools participate in iidex2016.

Product: Water and Oil Repellent Coating based on Fluorinated Monomer (FluoroPel)
Description: In coating industries, environmental and health apprehension has become an important and crucial concern. The development of coating products with the minimal environmental impacts such as low emission of volatile organic compound (VOC), energy consumption reduction and toxicity continues to be in high demand. Therefore, UV curable coating was a smart approach since it offers remarkable properties such as low energy consumption, low emission (100% solid or liquid formulation), time efficient and so on without compromising desired coating performance. However, existing UV technology often offset by the production of harmful ozone and mercury. At present, a more energy-efficient and environmentallyfriendly LED-based UV technology has proven a superior solution for many applications. On the other hand, the fluorinated product was well recognised as superior water and oil repellent due to its extraordinarily low surface energy structure. Notably, this UV-LED curable fluorinated polyurethane acrylate coating or called as FluoroPel used the power of chemistry to create effective products that meet environment goals respectively. Results from contact angle measurement proved that the surface coating became hydrophobic (88° to 121°) and oleophobic (62° to 100°) upon addition of fluorinated group. Not only that, the lower surface free energy of the surface coating indicating non-surface wettability make it suitable for various applications such as self-cleaning and liquid-repellent coating.
