JOHOR BAHRU, 6 APRIL 2019 – Nuclear Engineering Student Society (NESS) of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), has organized a half-day campaign focusing on the topic ‘Nuclear Awareness’.
The campaign, namely Nuclear Awareness Road Tour 2019 (NewClear 19’, previously known as NuCamp) was first established as an idea to spread awareness regarding nuclear energy amongst Malaysians who majorities seems to still believes that the issue should be considered as a taboo. It has come to the Nuclear Engineering Student Society (NESS) that it is time for the people to stop stigmatizing nuclear energy and start acknowledging it as one of the main powerful sources of energy.
A total of 116 form four students of Sekolah Tun Fatimah participated in NewClear 19’, giving a warm and enthusiastic welcome to the organizing committee. The students, accompanied by two teachers, Mrs. Norheza Hedra and Mrs. Shikin Ahmad, was divided into 11 groups and each was appointed with facilitator from NESS.
The organizing committee, NESS, decided to choose Sekolah Tun Fatimah in Johor Bahru as a cornerstone for the awareness campaign to take place. One of the main highlights of the campaign was the ‘Nuclear Awareness’ talk that was delivered by the campaign’s director, Mr. Ammar Ismail, a third year student of the Nuclear Engineering programme. “The society needs to know that nuclear is so much more than the Chernobyl accident or the Fukushima tragedy in Japan. Nuclear has a lot more to offer if people start to open up to accepting facts than myths. We can even save our dying earth with nuclear technology,” said Ammar during the opening speech.
Among other activities that were carried out were presentations on ‘Applications of Nuclear’ and pop quizzes that encourages the students to participate first hand and have an even clearer insight on what is nuclear energy. The campaign ended with a prize giving session to commemorate the school’s keen participation in spreading awareness in nuclear energy.
The Nuclear Engineering Student Society (NESS) thanked the participants and the people who made the campaign a success. Considering the positive feedbacks from the students and the teachers, the organizing committee did not plan to stop the journey and will continue to spread the awareness to other local schools and institutions in the future.
