NURTURING THE INNOVATIVE, ENTREPRENEURIAL AND GLOBAL FOR THE UNIVERSAL PROSPERITY AND WELL-BEING

Over the last decade, Asia has been the focus of the world’s attention due to the rapid growth and development in economy, technology and education in this region.

In Asia, the UTM Faculty of Chemical Engineering (FChE) is a brand thast has been established in collaboration with its five world class institutes and centres of excellences (COEs) in research and education to develop human capitals with innovative, entrepreneurial and global mindset for the universal prosperity and well-being.  UTM FChE has been the hub for R & D as well as teaching and learning in

  • Biotechnology and natural products under the Institute of Bioproduct Department or IBD (formerly Chemical Engineering Pilot Plant (CEPP),
  • Process Systems Engineering under Process Systems Engineering Centre (PROSPECT),
  • Hydrogen Economy and HSE under the Institute of Hydrogen Economy,
  • Oil and fats under the Centre for Lipid Engineering and Applied Sciences (CLEAR),
  • Engineering Education under the Regional Centre on Engineering Education (RCEE).

The UTM FChE is the beacon of excellence in world class teaching and learning, research, development of innovative technology, life-long learning and community engagement in the region, and is well-positioned to lead the nation towards its developed status by 2020, and to contribute towards universal prosperity and well-being.

Industrial Relations

Over the years, our close industrial relations have resulted in several Faculty positions fully or partially sponsored by research-based industrial companies, such as Malaysia Genome Institute, Lembaga Perindustrian Nanas Malaysia, All Cosmos Sdn. Bhd., Entogenex Industries Sdn. Bhd., Indah Water Konsortium Sdn. Bhd. and Syarikat Air Johor Holding Bhd. This year, we received a new grant from Malaysia Genome Institute for a research on “Structural and Functional Genomics of Glycoside and Peptide Hydrolases from the Extremophiles Glaciozyma Antarctica and Bacillus Lehensis G1 for the Biobased Economy” with an amount of RM0.75 million. In this relation, I wish to extend a big congratulation to Prof. Dr. Rosli Illias for successfully granted this grant.

Strong International Links

Internationalization has always been of utmost importance for the faculty. Over the years, we have established strong links to leading universities from all over the world. During recent years, we have offered other universities to use our pilot facilities within unit operations and process technology through summer and short courses.

Active Students and Professional Organization

Also our student organization was very active during 2013. The most important new activity was probably the participation of our students in organizing two world-class conferences which are International Conference on Process Systems Engineering (PSE Asia 2013) and International Conference on Separation Technology (ICoST 2013). The students all took active part not only as organizing committee but also with oral/poster presentations and met the opportunity to forge new international relations. We also hope to have our students participate in important international meetings and conferences in the coming years.

Over the years, we have thoroughly enjoyed the challenges and together with colleagues at the faculty I am looking forward to further develop UTM Faculty of Chemical Engineering in leading the way and continuously break new grounds in the existing field of Chemical Engineering.
